Sam Irwin

Sam Irwin, a native of Breaux Bridge, is the public relations director for the American Sugarcane League. He has also served as press secretary for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and editor of the Louisiana Market Bulletin farm journal. He freelances for several regional publications, including Country Roads, Offbeat and House and Home.
As editor of the Louisiana Market Bulletin, Irwin had the opportunity to photograph the fruit stands of New Orleans’ French Market and the longleaf pines of the Clifton Choctaw.  He has shot sugar mills, dairies, rice fields, cotton plantations, Brahmans, thoroughbreds, paints, quarterhorses, combines, cane cutters, cropdusters, wild hogs, roosters, blue crawfish and albino alligators.Irwin is concerned that even in a rural state like Louisiana, people are losing their connection with agriculture. Schoolchildren believe their milk comes from the store instead of a dairy cow. One college student said to Irwin, “Farmers? They still have those?”
